DESCRIPTION

The Center for the Built Environment (CBE) is an industry/university cooperative research center within the Center for Environmental Design Research (CEDR) at University of California, Berkeley. Our mission is to improve the design, operation, and environmental quality of buildings by providing timely, unbiased information on new building technologies and design strategies, and evaluating commercial building performance in terms of resource use and human factors. CBE industry sponsors are industry leaders that include manufacturers, building operators, utilities, government agencies, and architecture, engineering, and construction firms. More information about CBE is available at:http://www.cbe.berkeley.edu.

For over ten years CBE has been conducting web-‐-‐-‐based survey research that assesses occupant satisfaction with indoor environmental quality in commercial buildings. To date, over 1000 buildings have been surveyed, with more than 100,000 occupant responses. The survey research includes a vast dataset from which we can study occupant responses to factors related to building design and operation. This database continues to be steadily populated, and has been the source of numerous published papers. More information is available at:www.cbesurvey.org.

CBE seeks an Associate/Full Specialist capable of guiding the occupant survey project by facilitating database growth, improving and utilizing tools for data analysis, and producing new insights into relationships between buildings and occupant satisfaction. The survey lead will be responsible for many diverse activities, listed below:

● Carry out building evaluation studies: Work with client organizations, managers and occupants of the buildings being studied. Oversee UC Berkeley students and staff involved in the studies. Work with industry and government clients to develop new survey capabilities. Work with UCB administration (such as the Sponsored Projects Office, and the Committee for the Protection of Human Subjects) to facilitate the survey projects.
● Lead research efforts: Analyze the benchmarking database to discover relationships between building design and operation, and occupant satisfaction and productivity. Identify potential business implications of research findings. Provide support for faculty and researchers using survey tools and data for related research.
● Prepare proposals, reports, and articles about the use of occupant feedback, and about discoveries from analysis of our benchmarking database. Synthesize findings for diverse audiences, including publication in industry and academic journals and other media outlets. Assist in the creation of publicity materials to increase visibility of the CBE survey within the building industry.
● Identify funding opportunities and write funding proposals to support the survey research. Manage a research budget having diverse funding sources.
● Maintain and continuously improve survey tools: Oversee the maintenance of the survey database and associated survey software and data hosting, provide or manage troubleshooting, backups and security, and work with programmers to make improvements. Provide secure access to the dataset via existing analysis tools. Oversee an evaluation of survey tools, and identify and implement strategic short-‐-‐-‐ and long-‐-‐-‐term improvements for software, hosting, and access.
● Travel may be occasionally required. Some evening and weekend work may be required.

Basic Qualifications required at time of application
● Master’s or equivalent degree in architecture, engineering, psychology, sociology, information management, computer science or a related field.

Additional Required Qualifications
● Excellent oral/written communication skills, including the ability to present technical material to a professional audience. Ability to work in a team environment as well as independently.
● Experience in research development and implementation, writing research reports, and research budget planning and coordination.
● Expertise with standard MS Office software, including advanced spreadsheet analysis, and familiarity with statistical methods and tools.

Additional Preferred Qualifications
● Professional experience in building science research, particularly in the field of human factors, or research related to public health and/or environmental psychology.
● Expertise with complex relational database management (MySQL or other).
● Experience with survey design, implementation and analysis, using database queries, and creating web-‐-‐-‐based applications using web-‐-‐-‐authoring tools, Python or other current programming languages.
● Knowledge related to commercial building design and operation, building science, productivity research, and/or user interface design and software development.

This is a one-‐-‐-‐year full time (100%) FTE position with a starting salary range of $52,344 to $83,184, plus benefits depending on qualifications.
